Yagrumo Learn · Made in Puerto Rico
See how technology thinks.
Three games. Outsmart a machine that reads, test what you know about the island’s 78 municipios, and steer a coquí with a few lines of Python. Nothing to install, any age.
The yagrumo is one of the first trees to grow back after a hurricane. Its leaves are green on top and silver underneath.
Three labs
Pick a question. Play your way to the answer.
Start anywhere. Each lab stands on its own.
Lab 01 · AI
Mind Lab
A word-guessing game against a machine. Describe the secret word without saying the forbidden ones, and see how it turns your words into numbers.
Lab 02 · Data
Query Lab
Island trivia. Guess which municipio is bigger, more crowded or smaller, then watch the island’s own data answer.
Lab 03 · Code
Code Lab
How does code give orders? Write a few lines of Python and watch Quí the coquí follow them exactly, bugs included.
Lab 01 · AI
Make the machine guess.
You know the secret word. The machine doesn’t. Describe it without saying the forbidden words, and watch how it turns your clue into numbers to work out what you mean.
coquí
Inside the machine
1It chops your clue into tokens, and each token is just a number.
2Each word becomes a list of numbers: a vector. Brighter means stronger.
3It adds them up and finds the closest secret word.
What you just saw
Chat AI does these same three steps. It splits text into tokens, turns each token into a vector (a long list of numbers that encodes meaning), and then works with those numbers. It never sees letters, only numbers that point in directions of meaning.
This machine knows about 500 words and uses 22 numbers per word, and we named each number so you can read it. Real models use thousands of numbers per token, learned from huge amounts of text, and nobody names them.
More inside the machine · How it writes
It writes one word at a time, by rolling weighted dice.
This tiny model read a short story about the island and counted which word tends to follow which. Spin the wheel to choose the next word.
What just happened
Chat AI does exactly this, at enormous scale. Instead of a short story, it learned from a huge share of the written world, and it looks back over thousands of words instead of two.
Temperature is a real setting. Low makes the model predictable. High makes it creative, then nonsense. Notice that the wheel never checks whether a sentence is true. That's why AI can sound confident and still be wrong.
More inside the machine · How it learns
Nobody writes the rule. It finds it.
This is a real neural network, training live in your browser. Pick a puzzle and press Train. It bends the border, a tiny bit at a time, until every dot sits on the right side.
What it sees · the border it drew
Its brain · each square is one neuron
What just happened
Training is one loop, repeated: guess, measure the mistake, nudge every connection a little, again. Each square in the brain panel shows what one neuron learned to notice. Early neurons see straight lines; later ones combine them into curves.
Try the Island with 1 neuron. It can't be done, because a single neuron can only draw a straight line. More neurons, more shapes. The chatbots you use run this same loop with billions of connections.
Mind Lab · recap
Now you know the whole trick.
- Pieces. Text is chopped into tokens, and each token is a number.
- Meaning. Each token becomes a vector; similar ideas point the same way.
- Dice. The model picks the next word from weighted odds, one at a time.
- Learning. Those odds come from a network that tuned itself by fixing its own mistakes.
Lab 02 · Data
How well do you know the island?
Eight questions about Puerto Rico’s 78 municipios. Make your guess, then watch the island’s own data answer, along with the exact query it ran.
Which has more people?
Round over
You know this island.
Curious about something else? Change the query on the right and ask the island yourself.
One table, municipios: name, region, population, area_sq_mi. 2020 Census counts and land areas as listed on Wikipedia’s “Municipalities of Puerto Rico”. Regions are an informal grouping.
Lab 03 · Code
Get Quí to the fruit.
Quí the coquí does exactly what the Python says, line by line, mistakes included. Tap to write; no typing needed.
Island 1 of 6Hop in a straight line
Co-quí!
What Quí understands
hop() moves one square the way the gold arrow points. turn_left() and turn_right() turn in place. blocked() is true when a rock, water or the edge is right ahead. at_fruit() is true once Quí is on the fruit. A line ending in a colon owns the indented lines under it.
