The Window with Rules
What is an API, really?
This film needs JavaScript and WebGL.
- Every colmado has a window. You don't walk into the back and grab things off the shelf. You ask at the window, the right way, and something comes back.
- The menu over the window lists exactly what you can ask for. Nothing more, nothing less. That menu is the API.
- You fill out a ticket in the format the window expects. What you want, how many, and your name.
- Regulars carry a card, so the window knows who's asking, and what they're allowed to order.
- Behind the window, the kitchen can change ovens, recipes, even the whole staff. As long as the window works the same, customers never notice.
- Then the tray comes back with a slip. Done. Or a reason why not. Out of bread. Wrong ticket. Trouble in the kitchen.
- Her app isn't the only window in town. The bakery uses other people's windows too. The bank for payments. The map for delivery. Even the weather, to know how much bread to bake.
- And here's the twist. The window doesn't care who's asking. A phone, a website, another company's computer, or an AI helper. Same menu. Same rules.
- Good windows have limits, so one customer can't empty the shelves for everyone else.
- But the ticket still has to travel. From your phone to the kitchen, across the island, across the sea. That journey is the internet.
